The Glencoe Folk Museum was co-founded in 1966 by Miss Barbara Fairweather
MBE, and Mrs Rae Grant and for both ladies, it was a life's work. Their aim was “To
collect, preserve and exhibit articles, costume, objects and information, relevant to the
history and social conditions of the Glencoe and North Lorn district for the purposes of
education and interest”.
In the early days Mrs Rae Grant’s support for the museum included physically stopping
the demolition of the building by standing in front of the bulldozer! Later she was
regularly seen outside the museum demonstrating how to spin or weave. Now in her
80's she enjoys meeting visitors to the museum and sharing her wealth of knowledge.
Staff and trustees are
mostly volunteers.
